Improving Mental Health and Sense of Security through Family Strengthening

Background In a village, Kraad, Sayana Hassan, aged 8, lived in a tin shed, along with her mother and ill father, which provided little protection to her especially in the harsh winter. They struggled to afford even the necessities. Sayana was deeply affected by her family’s circumstances and had developed anger issues. Lack of house was creating a sense of inferiority. Further, the father’s ill health made it difficult for them to even afford proper meals. There was a possibility that such situation may create have created risk for family separation.
Interventions A care plan was developed. Through advocacy with the Block Development Office, housing assistance of INR 1,50,000 under PMAY was secured for the family. The family was able to construct a new house. The case worker also sought assistance from the local Auqaf, which provided intermittent financial support to the family for food. HUF also managed clothes for the family. Counselling sessions were arranged for Sayana and her family.
Outcome As a result of these efforts, the family’s situation began to transform. A sense of security has been developed by the family. Sayana’s has improved her learning outcomes. Good feedback was also received from school.  Consistent monitoring and follow-up are made to ensure the progress made is sustained.
