How Medina Found Her Way Back to Home?

Background In Rayakhpora Shangus, located at 72 kms from Srinagar city, Medina, a seven-year-old girl child, is living with her grandmother, mother, and a younger three-year-old brother. Medina’s life took a disruptive turn following the untimely demise of her father in 2022. The death of her father created many financial difficulties for the family, making it challenging for the mother to take care of the entire family.

As life became challenging with no adequate support at home, Medina was sent away by her mother to live with her maternal uncle in another village in the same year when her father died. Besides the financial challenges, the limited space in the house was one of the main reasons for the family to decide to send Madina away to live with maternal uncle. Having endured the loss of her father and subsequent separation from her immediate family was impacting her mental health leading to emotional and behavioural issues.

Although Medina yearned for the warmth of her own family, the dream of returning home seemed distant, overshadowed by financial constraints and housing issues.

Interventions Child Protection Group and Humanity…the Ultimate Faith (HUF) diligently assessed the case and devised a comprehensive plan. Utilizing a Case Management approach, Medina’s reunification with her family was prioritized.

Housing assistance under PMAY was secured and they received an amount of INR 1,50,000. The family was able to construct a new house, ending the housing issues faced by them. As this happened, counselling sessions were also conducted by the HUF team with Medina focusing on helping her to deal with trauma and other emotional issues. These interventions resulted in a heartfelt reunion of Medina with her family restoring her familial bonds.

Mission Vatsalya sponsorship was sanctioned to Medina and her brother in 2023. An amount of INR 36000 was transferred to each of them for nine months together. As the family will receive sponsorship of INR 8000 per month for two children, it will alleviate the financial burden on the family to a greater extent.

Outcome The interventions resulted in a heartfelt reunion of Medina with her family restoring her familial bonds. The MHPSS support is also helping her to deal with trauma and behavioural issues, and the sponsorship support to her and her brother will also alleviate the financial burden on the family to a greater extent.
